Chancellor Charles R. Matthews
visits College
The College recently
hosted Charles R. Matthews, Chancellor and top administrator
of the Texas State University System, as its Spring 2006 Executive-in-Residence. More
than 300 students listened intently to his presentation Higher
Education in the 21st Century, which was given in a standing-room-only
Mafrige Auditorium.
"It is an honor
to be with you and to share in your educational experience," he greeted them. In his remarks he stressed the need
to increase educational levels within the State, identified
the two common barriers to higher education -- cost and lack
of academic preparation -- and discussed the steps being taken
to break down those barriers. His presentation ended
with a question-and-answer session with members of the audience.
His visit to the
College also included classroom sessions with commercial banking
students, a tour of the facilities and grounds, a warm College
of Business Administration welcome at a faculty breakfast
reception, and a luncheon with University officials.
Chancellor Matthews was selected to the position by the
Texas State University System Board of Regents on February
1, 2005 and has made numerous appearances across the
State to advance and support a comprehensive higher
education program that serves his fellow Texans.
He has called education "Texas' greatest need"
and believes an educated citizenry to be the State's
most valuable resource. His remarks in their entirety
are available here.
