2008

Dr. Ronny Daigle, assistant professor of accounting, is currently the Secretary of the Information Systems section of the American Accounting Association and is also the editor of that organization's In the Literature newsletter section.  He has been appointed chair of the Education Committee of the Information Systems Section for 2008-2010.  His duties include assisting the coordination of the Information Systems Section Mid-Year meeting each of the next two years, as well as being co-editor of the next edition of The Compendium of Classroom Cases and Tools, a tri-annual publication of the Information Systems Section.

Dr. Geraldine E. Hynes, associate professor of business communications, received the 2008 Outstanding Teacher Award from the Association for Business Communication-Southwestern US during the ABC-SWUS annual conference in March.   The award recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching business communication.

Dr. Marguerite P. Joyce taught the Interest Project Patch, Leadership, a prerequisite for the Gold Award for the 2008 Scout Saturday at SAM on February 23.  Dr. Joyce also received a Research Enhancement Grant (2008-9) from the Faculty Research Council at SHSU; her grant is on "The Impact of Managers' Communication Practices on Workplace Violence."  On March 7,  Dr. Joyce presented a paper on "Students' Preferred Means of Communication: Convenience or Effectivness" at the Federation of Business Disciplines, the Association for Business Communication.  Her paper was also selected for the Association for Business Communication SWUS Preceedings of 2008.

Dr. Vic Sower, Dr. Jo Ann Duffy, and Dr. Gerald Kohers  have co-authored "Benchmarking for Hospitals: Achieving Best-in-Class Performance without Having to Reinvent the Wheel."  The book is about benchmarking in hospitals--identifying and learning how best-in-class hospitals achieved excellence.  It is the result of over 18 months research by the authors.

Dr. Vic Sower, professor of management, was recently appointed to the Editorial Advisory Board of Health Care Management Review (HCMR).  HCMR is a peer-review international journal which "publishes quality manuscripts of relevance to a broad health care management audience."

Dr. Ross Quarles, professor of accounting and COBA SAP Program Director and Mr. Fawzi Noman, management information systems instructor and COBA Technology Director, received the 2008 SAP University Alliance Outstanding Service Award during the SAP Curriculum Congress held in Atlanta.  Dr. Quarles and Mr. Noman have developed numerous SAP based cases and the use of these cases has allowed COBA to award a SAP Certificate of Completion to SHSU graduates who have completed at least three courses in which a minimum of 30% of the curriculum in each class is SAP based.

2007

Dr. Ronny Daigle, assistant professor of accounting, is co-author of two recent publications.  His research addressing the assessment of student learning outcomes appears in the Spring 2007 issue of the Journal of Information Systems and his study of the demand for continuous assurance is available in this year's issue of Advances in Accounting Behavioral Research. 

Robert "Chip" Matthews, assistant professor, recently made a presentation to members and guests of the Petroleum Accountants Society of Houston entitled "Implementing Enterprise Risk Management." 

Dr. Robert Stretcher, associate professor of finance, was elected second vice president of the Academy of Economics and Finance for 2007-08.  He will be coordinating all distinguished research awards for the February '08 conference and will promote conference attendance and academy membership.  He received the Academy of Economics and Finance Teaching Fellow award at its annual meeting in Jacksonville, Florida in February.  The award honors Dr. Stretcher, who began developing web-based automated instruction in the early days of online instruction, for his accomplishments in both educational innovation and instruction.  He has presented his research on experiential learning techniques to faculty across the country and is a recognized scholar in case research in the study of finance.  Dr. Stretcher has published several refereed articles in various pedagogical reseach journals and co-authored a casebook for Prentice Hall.

Dr. Geraldine E. Hynes, associate professor, has just published the 4th edition of her book Managerial Communication: Strategies and Applications (McGraw Hill, 2008). The textbook is used in 60 graduate business programs throughout the United States; a Chinese-language version is also published for programs offered in the Pacific Rim. The new edition features an innovative eChapter about technologically-mediated communication; the linked web site provides current information on trends for usage and best practices and is updated twice a year.

Dr. Vic Sower  has authored "Benchmarking in Hospitals: When You Need More than a Scorecard" which was published in the August 2007 edition of Quality Progress.  He also has coauthored with Dr. Ross Quarles and Mr. Eric Broussard "Cost of Quality Usage and Its Relationship to Quality System Maturity" which was published in the International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management (2007).

2006

Dr. Elsie Ameen, associate professor of accounting, is Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Beta Gamma Sigma Houston Area Alumni and continues her service this year on the Board of Directors for the Houston chapter of the Trauma Assistance Group.  TAG is a nonprofit organization that assists in the prevention, intervention and recovery of local citizens, especially children and adolescents, who have been involved in traumatic situations.

Dr. Jo Ann Duffy, professor of management, received the Southwest Academy of Management Outstanding Educator Award at the Federation of Business Disciplines meeting in March in Oklahoma City.  Dr. Duffy is also the 2006 Track Chair for Innovative Education for the Decision Science Institute, and was President of the Southwest Academy of Management in 2004.  She has also co-authored a new text and has had two research papers recognized as "best papers" by two separate academic journals.

Dr. Geraldine Hynes is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Business Communication, a professional association committed to fostering excellence in business communication scholarship, research, education, and practice.  ABC publishes two academic journals:   the Journal of Business Communication and the Business Communication Quarterly.  Dr. Hynes is also serving as the Program Chair for ABC's 71st Annual International Convention, scheduled for October 25-28, 2006 in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Joseph Kavanaugh, assistant professor of management, is this year's President of the Southwest Case Research Association.

Dr. Alice A. Ketchand, associate professor of accounting, is the Secretary-Treasurer for the Southwest Region of the American Accounting Association (SWAAA) for the current academic year.

2005

James B. Bexley, chairholder of the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking at the College, was awarded the Larry R. Watts Distinguished Service Award for his involvement in and support of the Journal of Commercial Banking and Finance at the Allied Academies Spring 2005 International Conference held in Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Doug Berg and Dr. Donald Bumpass have co-authored "Racial Differences in Interest Rates" published in the Midwestern Business and Economic Review, Fall 2004.

A research paper written by Dr. Charles J. Capps and Dr. Ronald L. Earl, professors of management for the College, and Mrs. Patricia J. Capps has been named Best Paper for the strategic management track by the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences. Their article "7x7 Strategic Management: A Holistic Executive Perspective" has been accepted for presentation and proceedings publication by the Society for its annual meeting in Las Vegas.

Assistant professors Dr. Geraldine Hynes and Dr. Robert Stretcher and professor Dr. Charles Stowe collaborated on the award-winning paper "Business School Deans' Perceptions of E-Journals," which is slated for publication in the Journal of the Academy of Educational Leadership. Dr. Stowe presented the paper during the fall 2004 Allied Academies conference in Maui, Hawaii, where it won the Distinguished Research Award.

Dr. Juliana D. Lilly, assistant professor of management, received a Best Research Paper award in October at the Institute for Behavioral and Applied Management conference in Providence, Rhode Island. "The Effect of Personality on Perceptions of Justice" relates how individual personality traits affect employees' perceptions of the fairness of employment policies and practices, and how personality testing during the hiring process might benefit both employers and employees. Dr. Meghan Virick, University of Texas at Arlington, is the co-author.

Dr. Hiranya Nath, assistant professor of economics, recently published three articles in refereed journals. His "Relative Importance of Sectoral and Aggregate Sources of Price Changes" appeared in the September 2004 issue of Applied Economics. The March 2004 issue of Economics Letters printed his article "Inflation and Relative Price Variability: Short-Run vs. Long-Run." And the Quarterly Journal of Business and Economics published "Relative Price Changes as Supply Shocks." Dr. Nath has three more research papers accepted for 2005 publication, one co-authored by COBA assistant professor Dr. Robert Stretcher.

Dr. Victor E. Sower, professor of management, co-authored an article appearing in the January 2005 issue of Quality Management Journal entitled "There is More to Quality than Continuous Improvement: Listening to Plato." Dr. Sower is also profiled in the fall 2004 issue of QP Connection, published by the American Society for Quality.

Dr. David Taylor's paper "Understanding IS Worker Turnover Decisions" received the Distinguished Research Award at Allied Academies' October 2004 conference. Dr. Taylor specializes in management information systems at the College.

Dr. Elsie C. Ameen, associate professor of accounting, exemplifies the goal of service. In addition to her teaching and research duties, Dr. Ameen serves as treasurer of the Houston Area Alumni Chapter of the business student honor society Beta Gamma Sigma. Associate professor of accounting Dr. Jeffrey Strawser is the 2005 faculty advisor for Beta Alpha Psi, COBA's financial information student organization, and helped ensure an accurate vote on Election Day. Dr. Strawser and his student volunteers received a formal letter of appreciation from Walker County's Deputy Clerk of Elections for the invaluable assistance provided during the presidential election.
